NCT Check

PRE- NCT TESTING

In Ireland, the National Car Test (NCT) is a mandatory automobile inspection program. The NCT's main goal is to promote road safety and environmental protection in Ireland by lowering hazardous vehicle emissions.

The NCT is a check of the test's fundamental requirements at the time. It assesses the visible and accessible components of the vehicle. Passing the NCT test does not exempt you from maintaining your vehicle on a regular basis. Even if you pass the NCT, you must continue to service your vehicle on a regular basis.

Your car's fuel efficiency will improve if you inspect and service it on a regular basis. It will also aid in lowering overall maintenance costs and the likelihood of malfunctions.

WHY GET AN NCT?

Driving an unroadworthy vehicle or one that does not have a valid NCT certificate is illegal.

The following government guidelines are now in effect:

  • Driving a car that is dangerously faulty earns you five penalty points
  • Driving a car without repairing a defect discovered at the NCT earns you three penalty points
  • Driving without a certificate of road worthiness earns you five points
  • The Garda Siochana, who have access to NCT records, are responsible for enforcing the NCT
  • Avoid penalty points and improve your road safety today

At Twitch Fix we will pre-test your car for FREE!

WHAT CARS MUST BE TESTED AND HOW OFTEN?

The NCT is conducted every 2 years for vehicles younger than 10 years. If your car is older than 10 years, it must be brought for an NCT test every year.

Testing was introduced on a phased basis as follows:

  • The year 2000: Cars first registered before 1 January 1992
  • The year 2001: Cars first registered between 1992-1996
  • The year 2002 onwards: All four-year-old cars and eligible older cars i.e pre-92 registered cars tested in the year 2000 will be eligible for testing again in the year 2002 because testing is every two years

The main failure items for 2016 were:

  • Tyres
  • Front Suspension
  • Brake Line / Hoses
  • Headlamp Aim
  • Stop Lamps

The resistance of the rollers may be adjusted on a rolling road, which rests between two rollers and allows the automobile to speed without moving. The undulating route is perfect for horsepower and torque testing. This service includes the printing of test results for the customer.

Brake imbalance occurs when one side of the brake pair, either the front or back axle, does not exert as much force as the other. It may be a stuck calliper, a worn pad, or air in the lines, among other things.

The sideslip test mimics driving on a level, straight road without touching the steering wheel. Over a 1km distance, this measurement represents how many metres a vehicle would deviate to the left (-) or right (+) hand side.

One of the most prevalent reasons for NCT failure is improper headlight alignment. If your headlights are set too high, they will distract oncoming vehicles, and if they are set too low, your line of view will be obstructed.

Suspension is the mechanism that links a vehicle to its wheels and permits relative motion between them. It consists of tyres, tyre air, springs, shock absorbers, and linkages.

In cars, the parking brake, also called hand brake, emergency brake, or e-brake, is a latching brake usually used to keep the vehicle stationary.
